The transformation of the Army and the conflict in Nicaragua
Abstract
The transformation of the Army in Nicaragua is analyzed from the contextualization of the conflict in this country, starting with the coup d'état against the Somoza dictatorship, the dismantling of the National Guard and the establishment of the Sandinista National Liberation Front in power. Based on the above, it details the process of creation of the Sandinista Popular Army and the conformation of military structures to combat the attacks of the counterrevolutionary forces, known as "Los Contras". It also considers the Esquipulas Agreements that resulted in the democratization of Nicaragua and the demobilization of the counterrevolutionaries. Finally, the role of the Armed Forces and the institutions in the post-conflict period, which led to the current situation in the country, is evaluated by means of a case study method with consultation of specialized secondary sources.
